On this square format, Medsan places a single koi in black water. The fish curves downward, head toward the bottom left, body folded in an S, the round dark eye turned toward the viewer. Its back and flanks are covered with blue motifs on white background: rows of arched scales, waves, swirling foliage, a checkerboard of diamonds near the tail, and dark red flowers opened on the side.

A network of broad gold lines runs across the entire body, cutting the zones like pieces of the same set; a few small light fragments with blue decoration sit near the nape and the cheek. The fins and tail unfold into gray-white sails edged in gold, long and flowing. Around, the water swirls in black and gray spirals, with neither shore nor sky. In the bottom left, the cartouche メドサン in orange-red. The koi appears suspended, immobile in a current that does not touch it.

A bold and restrained piece, ideal for bringing a contemporary Japanese touch to an interior of a collector attached to images that hold the wall on their own.
