TRUE FIRST EDITION of 1860 of this masterpiece of nineteenth-century French literature.

First printing including the rare and desirable bicolored title page (printed in red and black) bearing the Poulet-Malassis fleur-de-lis mark and the date 1860.

Enriched by the beautiful original hors-texte frontispiece (engraved by Nargeot after Tony Johannot) placed opposite the title.

Nice twentieth-century style binding in half-morocco/leather with green corners, spine with raised bands dated 1860, and elegant gilt inner dentelle.

Gilded and very elegant endpapers adorned with a wide gilt dentelle tooling surrounding a superb variegated marbled paper in green and gold tones.

Top edge gilt.

CONDITION:
Binding: Very good, fresh and solid. Leather well preserved, spine sound, minimal signs of wear at corners and edges.

Interior: Copy well fresh and complete. Period paper preserved with margins. Light and sparse browning typical of this paper (notably in the margins of the frontispiece and title page, see photos), not affecting readability of the text.
