Christian Jodin (1970) - La Croisette

A cheeky, colourful Mediterranean night scene built around nine small vignettes, each offering a different glimpse of coastal life: figures, palm trees, moonlit views, architecture and flashes of everyday leisure. The deep blues and bright greens, yellows and pinks give the work an immediate, playful energy.

Jodin refers to this type of composition as “pictorial zapping”: a sequence of separate images presented together like rapid visual impressions. Here, the effect is almost cinematic, moving from one miniature scene to the next and creating a lively, fragmented portrait of the Mediterranean at night.

Christian Jodin (French, b. 1970) studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, graduating in 1992 after training across engraving, relief, sculpture, mosaic, painting and lithography. He subsequently worked as an engraver at the Monnaie de Paris before devoting himself fully to his own artistic practice from 1993. His work is characterised by what he calls “Pictorial Zapping”: fragmented compositions built from multiple individual scenes or repeated motifs. His work has been exhibited in France and internationally, including from Monaco to Osaka.

This painting was purchased directly from the artist at the Bastille Contemporary Art Market in Paris in 2001. It carries a personal dedication by Jodin on the reverse, written in red marker, providing an additional element of direct provenance from the artist.

The painting is signed three times: “C. Jodin” at the lower right of the painted surface, “Christian Jodin” on the wooden stretcher, and again within the handwritten dedication on the reverse. The repeated signatures, together with the dated dedication, provide particularly clear direct provenance from the artist.
