Splendid heraldic coat of arms depicting the Order of Saint Mary of Mercy, entirely handcrafted in its uniqueness (stone cast).
The order was founded in Barcelona on August 10, 1218 by Peter Nolasco with the aim of liberating Christian prisoners reduced to slavery by Muslims or pagans. To this end, the Mercedarians added a fourth vow, called the 'vow of redemption', by which they undertook to replace prisoners at risk of renouncing their faith. This vow was approved on January 17, 1235 by Pope Gregory IX, who imposed on the religious to follow the Rule of Saint Augustine as the fundamental norm.
