Raphaël Le Falher (1992) - Under the Crimson Moon

Under the Crimson Moon presents a solitary figure viewed from behind, her body rising gracefully through a richly coloured, atmospheric landscape. Draped in an expansive red skirt, she becomes the central point of a composition where the human figure, landscape and sky appear to dissolve into one another.

Above her, a small crescent moon emerges from a hazy, dreamlike sky of violet, rose, blue and muted green. The contrast between the vivid red of the garment and the cool atmospheric tones surrounding it gives the work a quietly cinematic quality.

Le Falher’s treatment of the figure is deliberately enigmatic. Her face remains unseen, inviting the viewer to consider her not as a specific individual, but as a vessel for contemplation, escape and transformation. The raised arms and flowing fabric suggest movement, while the moon introduces a sense of distance and reverie.

Painted in 2021, the work demonstrates Le Falher’s interest in combining figurative painting with an increasingly atmospheric and imaginative visual language.

Raphaël Le Falher

Born in Nantes, France, in 1992, Raphaël Le Falher graduated from the Pivaut School of Nantes in 2019 with a degree in Illustration.

His practice is rooted in a longstanding fascination with the fantastic and the psychological worlds it can evoke. Beginning with drawing and gradually moving into painting, Le Falher has developed a distinctive visual language in which reality is subtly unsettled, giving form to imagined spaces that exist somewhere between the familiar and the otherworldly.

At the centre of his work is the human body. Rendered with an academic sensitivity and informed by a deep understanding of classical figuration, the body is often altered, stretched or distorted, becoming a vessel through which more intangible states can be expressed.

Le Falher’s paintings explore the experience of inner blockage, the difficulty of being, and the sensation of confinement within oneself. His figures appear caught between physical presence and psychological tension, their bodies carrying a quiet sense of unease, vulnerability and introspection.

His visual vocabulary emerges from a dialogue between classical and contemporary influences. The traditions of artists such as William Adolphe Bouguereau and Caravaggio meet the darker, fantastical worlds of Frank Frazetta and Zdzisław Beksiński. The result is a body of work that combines technical discipline with an unsettling, dreamlike sensibility, where the human figure becomes a space in which the complexities of the inner world can unfold.
