The works arise from an artisanal and experimental process that makes each board unique. The surface is meticulously prepared and enriched with natural papers selected and tactile inserts, creating an irregular, three-dimensional base rich in texture that enhances the board’s structure. Subsequently, this surface is worked non-uniformly using mixed media, in which water-soluble pastels play a central role, creating layers, transparencies, and contrasts in dialogue with the underlying material. This series of works is made even more special by a particular technique developed by the artist: applying pastel shavings directly onto the board. These fragments of color are integrated into the surface, creating reliefs, chromatic vibrations, and an intense materiality that makes each board unreproducible. In this way, a balance is created between technical control and spontaneity, marking the artist’s transition from a consolidated digital practice to a more tactile, artisanal, and deeply material approach.

Giulia Piras began her studies at the Faculty of Biological Sciences due to her interest in naturalist themes. However, she chose to shift direction toward the Academy of Fine Arts, where she could deepen and practice her passion for scientific illustration.
She continued her studies specializing in Illustration at ISIA in Urbino. Today she lives in the Marche countryside, in Italy, surrounded by the Apennines, oak forests, and blooming meadows. She collaborates with publishers, magazines, companies, and advertising agencies.
She was selected for the Renner Prize for contemporary art. In 2021 she won the contest "Digital Inclusion" organized by Posterheroes. In 2025 she was selected for the Annual of Image Authors and for the BRAW (Bologna Ragazzi Award) Amazing Bookshelf.
