VOLTA - "A Hundred Small Escapes"

The blue is laid out fully, without hesitation, and supports the weight of the canvas: at the top the bank of compact clouds, below the dark slab of the sea. On the green meadow a cloud has settled — the same white and pale blue matter of the sky, but laid upon the grass like a body, with its shadow underneath. Around rise dozens of pink, yellow, light blue balloons, painted with full, swift strokes, each with its small knot: they cross the meadow, the sea, the cloud, ignoring any depth and keeping the surface in motion. Two storks walk in the grass without lifting their gaze, and their small presence makes the immensity of the rest measurable. The solemnity of the great landscape remains intact, but it has inverted itself: the sky has descended to Earth, and all that remains light goes upward, one by one.

Volta’s research moves along a path of return — not nostalgic, but active. The great tradition of European painting is the starting point: the period that each work evokes, from time to time. But the gesture with which this heritage is traversed is unequivocally contemporary. Color does not illustrate; it breathes. The brushstroke does not describe; it vibrates. What remains of the past is the deep structure — a certain idea of the body, of space, of light — while the surface is entirely present, entirely alive. Volta does not quote, he restitutes: his compositions seem to emerge from a shared cultural memory, brought to light with different eyes.
