The composition features the famous Dames beach in Noirmoutier, structured in horizontal bands. The background is dominated by a deep night-blue sky with a crepuscular atmosphere. In the center stands out the dark mass of the Chaise wood, enhanced with green touches and red rings on the trunks. At the foot of the vegetation line up the emblematic colorful beach huts in yellow, pink, orange, blue, whose vivid reflections rhythm the central band. In the foreground, the sand and the water’s edge alternate tones of ochre, yellow, intense blue and violet-shadowed areas.
Fauvist-style painting, the colors are pure, saturated and laid down in vibrant flat fields, freed from strict reality to privilege emotional intensity.
The use of dark lines to outline the trees and huts reinforces the landscape’s structure.
The striking contrast between the dark blue of the sky/sea and the warm, bright tones of the sand and huts creates a particularly theatrical nocturnal or crepuscular atmosphere.
