Precious and iconic photolithography by Sebastião Salgado made in 2004 in the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, during his epic trek of more than eight years that culminated in his work “Genesis.”
This fantastic still image shows a foot of a marine iguana from the Galápagos Islands. An image in which Salgado’s great talent to see the best lighting qualities and directions, as well as to capture textures in all their splendor, is perfectly evident, to the point that the animal’s scales glisten in such a way that they momentarily resemble the armored gauntleted hand of a medieval warrior.
“Genesis” is a worldwide-scale photographic quest in which Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado rediscovers places and people who, until then, had escaped the footprint of modern societies. Since 2004, he undertook more than thirty trips to the far corners of the world, to build a long-term photographic project on the environment, always shooting in black and white. He sailed oceans, climbed mountains, crossed deserts, observed animals, and approached indigenous peoples, with the aim of sharing their environments and cultures. Traveling to the most remote corners, often under difficult conditions, Salgado shows us the beauty of the planet’s least known parts. He also shows the need to preserve the planet and its beauty, which today are in danger.
The exhibition of this work broke every attendance record known up to that moment, cementing Sebastião Salgado as one of the most acclaimed and famous photographers of our time.
“In Genesis, I followed the romantic dream of wanting to find—and share—a primitive world that is far too often invisible and out of our reach. (…) I simply wanted to show nature in its splendor wherever I could find it. I discovered it in infinite spaces of immense biological diversity which, it should be noted, cover almost half the Earth’s surface, in vast deserts, largely unexplored, in immense tropical or temperate forests, and in mountain ranges of stunning beauty.
