Portrait d’un notable, an oil on canvas portrait from the 19th century by École européenne, France, measuring 78 × 66 cm, unsigned and sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
European School, 19th Century
Portrait of a Gentleman
Oil on canvas
Elegant male portrait belonging to the European school of the 19th century, executed within the academic and bourgeois tradition of nineteenth-century portraiture.
The work depicts an elderly gentleman, shown half-length and facing forward, dressed in dark attire and a white shirt finished with a black tie. The sobriety of the outfit concentrates all attention on the face, carefully individualized and treated with an evident psychological intention.
The painter builds the physiognomy with a restrained palette and soft lighting, highlighting especially the modeling of the flesh tones, the gray hair, the gaze, and the features marked by age. The face conveys a serene and firm expression, typical of the European bourgeois portrait of the 19th century, where the representation of character and the model's dignity acquires fundamental importance.
The neutral background, resolved in grayish tones, reinforces the austere character of the composition and allows the figure to stand out clearly. The chromatic range is based on blacks, grays, whites and warm flesh tones, creating a balanced ensemble of notable elegance.
The work can be placed within 19th-century European academic realism, heir to the great anterior portrait tradition, but already marked by a greater interest in direct observation, the individualization of the subject and a more restrained and naturalistic representation.
It is a painting of good artistic quality and notable decorative presence, especially interesting for the expressiveness of the model, the sobriety of the composition and the treatment of the face.
Condition: appreciable in the photographs. The work bears the traces and alterations typical of its age.
The painting is presented in a golden-era or historicist-style frame, with visible signs of wear and occasional losses consistent with its age.
The frame is offered as a gift along with the work, with no commercial value. For this reason, any possible damage or deterioration that could occur to the frame during transport cannot be the subject of a claim or compensation.
For shipments outside the European Union, additional customs, taxes or import duties may apply, which will be the buyer's responsibility and will depend on the legislation of the destination country.
