Artist's Biography:
Carlos Méndez trained in Buenos Aires, among groups of painters, and began his career by creating stage sets for theater and ballet. In 1962 he began to exhibit his work, taking it to various Argentine cities, and since 1973 he has also held exhibitions in Paris, Rome, and Mexico. Later, he studied printmaking in New York and San Francisco, and in 1976 he moved to Catalonia. There he exhibited in the rooms of Sant Cugat del Vallès and Barcelona. Later his painting was admired also in Colombia, Uruguay, Israel, the United States, Venezuela, and Germany.
His work initially stems from social realism, but following his arrival in Catalonia, his language evolved toward the informalism developed there from the 1960s. Since then his painting has been closely tied to magical realism. Thus, it is common in his work to have ambiguous dreamlike spaces where spectral appearances of odd characters with indistinct faces are staged, treated with a striking verisimilitude. Méndez uses figuration inherited from early 20th-century avant-garde movements, combining formal distortion with the expressive force of the line, dark and very pronounced. In his own words, it is a “realist abstraction,” with bare forms and focused on the human theme. To this day, Carlos Méndez has a résumé that spans nearly a hundred exhibitions, and his work is distributed in public and private collections of great significance.
