Robert Nieuwenhuys (Semarang (Dutch East Indies), 30 June 1908 – Amsterdam, 8 November 1999), who published as Rob Nieuwenhuys and also under the pseudonym E. Breton de Nijs, was a Dutch literary figure and a writer of Indo-Dutch descent.

Life
He grew up in the Indies and attended the HBS (secondary school) until he left for the Netherlands in 1927 to study Dutch literature and Indian law at Leiden University.

In 1935 Nieuwenhuys returned. He became a Dutch language teacher and was, from 1940 to 1942, a lecturer at the University of Batavia. He was editor of De Fakkel, a cultural magazine that existed in the Dutch East Indies during the uncertain period between the Netherlands’ capitulation in May 1940 and that of the Dutch East Indies in March 1942. Subsequently he spent the period of the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies (1942–1945) in a Japanese camp. Nieuwenhuys has a large number of publications relating to the Dutch East Indies to his name.
