Object description

The depiction shows a seated man with legs apart, dressed in a blue jacket, light upper garment, brown trousers and high dark boots. The bowed head rests in a hand; the elbow supports a lightly indicated raised surface on the left. The other hand lies at the upper leg. Between the legs is a military helmet with a visor and a yellow ornament. Lower left sits a reddish-brown object next to a slanted rod-like form. The surroundings remain largely unfinished. A horse is not depicted.

Technique and material analysis

The pastel consists of dark contour lines, short hatching and broader color fields. In the blue jacket a grainy texture is discernible. Light accents model the face, hands and the clothing around the neck and chest. The brown paper remains visible between the color strokes.
