Description from the seller
Byzantine Icon “Apostle Mark”
Historical Byzantine icon depicting the Apostle Mark, frontal, holding a book. The depiction shows typical features of Eastern Orthodox icon painting with a gilded background and an elaborately worked halo.
On the back there is an older, glued label with the designation “Apostle Mark … Hilandar (Athos) … 14th c.”, which points to a provenance or attribution to the Hilandar Monastery area on Mount Athos.
The information on the label dates the piece to the “14th c.”, explicitly as an indication on the back label and not as a proven scholarly dating.
Wooden panel, back with clearly visible patina of age and numerous worm/ insect damage traces. The front shows extensive, age-related losses and abrasion of the paint layer as well as losses of the gilding. The original painting, however, is still clearly visible in essential areas. Signs of aging and use, cracks or tensions and color losses present.
Condition: original material with noticeable losses. Sale as shown.
Dimensions: approx. 31 cm × 26 cm × 2.5 cm
Material: wood, tempera painting, gilding
Subject: Apostle Mark
Origin/Attribution: according to the back label Hilandar / Athos, 14th c.; not independently verified.
In any case, the chronological attribution is around 1900, according to an icon expert.
