Description from the seller
Ancient brass postal scale for letters with a complete nested (interlocking) weight set – Italy, circa 1900
Splendid and elegant beam postal scale for weighing letters, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.
This refined desk instrument is an authentic example of Italian artisanal craftsmanship of the era.
The oscillating mechanism is entirely made of solid brass, mounted on a solid and elegant carved hardwood base with onion-shaped feet.
The scale features an oval upper dish for holding the mail and a circular lower dish for placing the weights.
The real highlight of this lot is the exceptional presence of its original, 100% complete set of metric nest weights (nest or cup weights).
The weights fit perfectly one inside the other within the brass housing carved into the wooden base.
The set includes 50-gram, 30-gram blocks and the very small and rare central 10-gram weight, all bearing the original engraving with the value and the inscription "GRAMMI".
The item presents itself in excellent mechanical condition, with the arms perfectly movable.
It retains its charming and genuine dark patina of age that certifies its historical authenticity and has not undergone invasive restorations.
Free of industrial marks, underscoring its hand-crafted workshop origin.
A pristine collectible piece, ideal for enriching professional studios or collections of antique scientific instruments.
