Antique Devotional Medallion in Seafoam with Beveled Glass - "The Crucifixion" - Signed Bloch - Late 19th Century
Description
Refined and antique devotional display case medallion dating from the late 19th century (Napoleon III era). Inside it houses a splendid bas-relief finely carved in seafoam (sepiolite), depicting the solemn Calvary scene with Jesus Christ on the cross, flanked by the Pious Women in a posture of deep prayer and sorrow.
The work stands out for the very high quality of the carving, evident in the plasticity of the drapery and in the expressive details of the sacred figures. Along the lower edge of the bas-relief is the rare engraved signature of the author "Bloch", a famous signature associated with workshops and sculptors specializing in the Franco-German area of the nineteenth century, renowned for the craftsmanship of this particular material.
The sculpture is enclosed and protected by its original beveled glass from the period, mounted inside a perimeter frame in patinated brass or copper, finely worked in torchon, which serves as an elegant closure. A collectible piece of great charm and visual impact, ideal for collectors of sacred art and period antiques.
