La Dame en noir, an oil painting by the Spanish school from the 19th century, origin Spain, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Magnificent oil on canvas belonging to the Spanish school of the 19th century, representing the portrait of a mature lady, elegantly dressed in a dark gown and wearing various jewelry.
It is a work of notable pictorial quality, especially appreciable in the treatment of the face, resolved with great precision and sensitivity. The artist pays special attention to the expression of the portrayed, with a direct, serious and restrained gaze, managing to convey a marked psychological presence and a pronounced individuality.
The figure emerges against a dark and practically neutral background, a device that concentrates all attention on the face and allows the warm flesh tones to stand out through a soft and carefully modulated lighting. The black attire, treated with great sobriety, contrasts with the golden reflections of the collars and earrings, elements that add distinction to the overall composition. The emphasis given to clothing and jewelry is characteristic of the nineteenth-century Spanish female portrait, where these elements could also express the social position of the sitter.
The work is related to the important tradition of Spanish portraiture of the 19th century, in which realism, individual observation of the model, and psychological characterization progressively took on a greater role. The Prado Museum points precisely to the evolution of the nineteenth-century Spanish portrait from Romanticism toward realist and naturalist approaches during the last decades of the century.
What stands out is the contrast between the meticulousness of the face and the greater sobriety of the dress and the background, resulting in a portrait of great force, austerity, and elegance, representative of Spanish painting of its time.
Oil on canvas.
The work presents some faults and signs of age, visible in the photographs. The state of conservation is as can be seen in the images, which form an integral part of the description. Due to its age, it may show craquelure, wear, small losses, scuffs, restorations or prior interventions. It is recommended to carefully examine all photographs before bidding.
The work is framed. The frame is included only as courtesy to the buyer and is not considered an integral part of the work, so any damage, loss or deterioration of the frame will not be a ground for complaint.
