DESCRIPTION
Interesting oil on canvas painting attributed to Filadelfo Simi, an important representative of Tuscan painting between the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly appreciated for the quality of drawing, the refinement of painting technique, and the sensitivity in rendering figures.
The composition features a female figure, characterized by an accurate drawing and a painting attentive to the rendering of volumes, skin tones, and light relationships.
The artist, trained at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts and later in Paris at the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme, developed a painting based on solid academic preparation, combined with naturalistic sensibility.
Particularly significant for attribution is the signature placed in the central part of the painting, corresponding to the shoulder of the right-hand female figure, visible in the detail photograph.
The presence of the signature, together with the stylistic and technical characteristics of the work, makes the painting worthy of the attention of collectors interested in 19th-century Tuscan painting and early 20th-century painting.

THE AUTHOR
Filadelfo Simi was born in Levigliani, in Upper Versilia, in 1849. After training at the Scuola di Belle Arti di Seravezza, in 1869 he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he graduated in 1873.
With the support of patron Angiolo Vegni, in 1874 he moved to Paris, attending the studio of the celebrated academic painter Jean-Léon Gérôme. The French sojourn was fundamental to his formation.
Returned to Italy, Simi developed an autonomous artistic personality, dedicating himself mainly to figure painting, portraits, interior scenes, and landscapes. He participated in major Italian and international exhibitions, receiving important recognitions.
In 1878 he settled in Umbria, in the town of Papigno in the Nerina Valley, where he was hosted in the local rectory, which he transformed into an exhibition hall. This Umbrian period was extraordinarily productive: he created masterpieces such as La tisica, San Gerolamo, I giocatori di morra, Il berretto rosso, I pescatorelli, and La superbiosa. During this stay he received visits from the writer Mario Pratesi, his admirer, who appreciated Simi’s remarkable skill as a portraitist. The painting in question could belong to this period.
In 1888 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he taught at the School of the Nude, and in 1910 he became President of the Painting Section of the Florentine Academy. He died in Florence in 1923.
His work Un riflesso, presented at the National Exposition of Venice in 1887, was purchased by the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, contributing to his prominence in the national artistic panorama.
