HISTORY AND ARTISTIC VALUE:
An emblematic work of the repertoire of the famous Parisian cabaret 'Le Chat Noir' in Montmartre. It contains the complete vocal and piano scores accompanied by magnificent full-page lithographic illustrations by Henri Rivière (L'Étoile, Les Bergers, Les Soldats, Les Rois Mages, La Crèche, Apothéose...). These engravings capture the iconic scenes of Chinese shadow puppetry and silhouettes in chiaroscuro that elevated Rivière within Japonism and the fin-de-siècle French symbolism.
CONDITION:
- Binding: Original illustrated hardboard binding with cloth spine. Shows natural aging wear at the edges, rubbed corners, and small loss/old reinforcement on the upper cover of the spine (see photographs).
- Interior: In generally good condition, stout paper, clean and with excellent contrast in the lithographs and musical notation.
