Oil on canvas titled Piazza con monumento equestre e figure, a city view in an Expressionist style, Italy, 1970–1980, by Emanuele Cappello; 50 × 70 cm, hand-signed, original edition, sold with its frame.
Description from the seller
Emanuele Cappello (1936) - Large "View of a Square with Equestrian Monument and Figures" - Oil on canvas 50x70 cm - 70s/80s
Lot description:
Important oil painting on canvas by master Emanuele Cappello, an artist trained in Palermo, Florence and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, widely documented in contemporary art repertoires and included in the prestigious international Bénézit dictionary.
The work depicts a lively and dynamic city square dominated in the center by an equestrian monument on a high white base. The composition is executed with a markedly painterly technique, rich in chiaroscuro contrasts and flat areas laid on with skilled use of spatula and brush, elements typical of the artist's mature production (roughly placed between the late 1970s and the 1980s).
Passersby, rendered with rapid and fluttering strokes of pure color (notable touches of red and green), emphasize the sense of movement, transience, and vitality of urban space.
