With this square-format piece, Medsan brings the Xenomorph from Alien, the creature sketched by H. R. Giger for Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, into the vocabulary of blue-and-white porcelain and kintsugi. The composition assembles four motifs on a cracked surface: a spaceship corridor where the Xenomorph advances toward an airlock, a network of industrial pipes, a cracked and bloodstained space helmet, and an opened egg whose four lobes part. The cartouche メドサン, signed in cinnabar red at the bottom of the work, seals the whole like a Japanese workshop seal.

The treatment revisits cobalt-blue underglaze tradition, that of Ming porcelains and their Delft successors: fine line, tight hatching, washes modeling volumes without ever using color. The ivory background bears a fine Guan-type crackle, pierced by major fissures highlighted with urushi gold following the kintsugi technique. These golden streams traverse the decor, cut the helmet in two, and bypass the egg, imposing their accidental geometry over the drawing’s deliberate geometry. The only chromatic note: the red blood trail on the visor, the sole deviation in an otherwise strictly bichrome palette.

The comparison is closer than it may seem. Kintsugi repairs the broken object by highlighting its wound rather than hiding it, while the Xenomorph is born precisely from a breach of the body and leaves behind hollow shells. The work thus overlays two opposite ways of handling breakage: the one that destroys and the one that repairs, united on a single surface where one no longer knows whether the gold consoles the porcelain or tells the catastrophe.

A work of strong graphic poise, ideal for adding a touch that is both Japanese-influenced and science-fiction to the interior of a collector devoted to cinema references as well as to ceramic traditions.
