The "Nicolaus Amatus fecit in Cremona 1657" mark is a model designation rather than a maker’s attribution. From the late 19th century onward, German workshops — notably in Saxony and the Markneukirchen region — produced large numbers of quality trade violins built after the celebrated Amati pattern of Cremona, and the "Made in Germany" stamp confirms this workshop origin. Instruments of this lineage are valued for their even, singing tone and honest period craftsmanship, and remain sought after by players and collectors.

The violin is built with a fine-grained spruce top and a two-piece flamed maple back with matching ribs, finished in a warm red-brown varnish that brings out the flame of the wood. The scroll is cleanly carved and the purfling runs crisply around the edges. Ebony-style fittings, a carved bridge and a chinrest complete the setup.
