Description from the seller
Marcin Pawlik – 8 × Hands Mickey
8 × Hands Mickey is an expressive, multi-layered spatial object balancing on the edge of low relief, pop art, and conceptual installation. Marcin Pawlik deconstructs the classical concept of painting, replacing the traditional canvas surface with a dynamic, dimensional interplay of planes, forms, and material tensions.
The composition is built from over a dozen precisely cut, individually painted components mounted within a sturdy frame. The essence of the piece lies in the dialogue between the background and a transparent barrier: the base board is covered by a pane of thin acrylic glass featuring stylized, hand-like objects. This technique generates an intriguing illusion of levitation—the titular hands seem to detach from the physical base, suspended in the space between the viewer and the inner depth of the composition.
The arrangement of the eight gestures dictates a distinct rhythm. The motif of the hand—a primal symbol of creation, touch, agency, but also helplessness and repetition—takes on a modern, almost graphic character in Pawlik's interpretation. Due to the layered construction, the piece shifts in appearance depending on the viewing angle and the interplay of ambient light, which casts subtle shadows onto the deeper levels behind the glass.
The raw structural ground, the precision of the cut modules, and the smoothness of the acrylic glass create a deliberate textural contrast. It is a powerful, visually striking work executed with meticulous attention to structural detail—a standout example of contemporary narrative relief.
