Description from the seller
Sundial with Compass Dollond London Brass – Blue Velvet Case – 1980s
Elegant and refined collectible instrument composed of a sundial with a compass, made of brass and accompanied by its blue velvet case.
A small object of great charm, capable of uniting in a single elegant composition two ancient instruments tied to navigation, orientation, and time measurement. The design recalls the tradition of fine scientific and nautical instruments and presents a strong scenic character despite its very small size.
The sundial with compass is a particularly interesting object for collectors of scientific, nautical, and astronomical instruments. The presence of the compass allows correct orientation of the instrument while the sundial uses the Sun’s position to indicate the time.
The operating principle is that of ancient sundials: a small rod or gnomon projects its shadow onto the dial, and when the instrument is correctly oriented toward the North, the shadow allows reading the solar time indicated by the engravings on the dial.
The compass thus plays a fundamental role in orienting the sundial, making this small instrument not only decorative but also an interesting example of the combination between astronomy, navigation, and timekeeping.
