J. Richard, L’Océanographie, illustrated hardback edition in a green binding, Paris, Vuibert & Nony, circa 1909, 400 pages, French original, subjects natural history, geography and science.
Description from the seller
J. Richard — Oceanography — illustrated green publisher’s bevelled binding — around 1909 — Vuibert & Nony, Paris
A very beautiful old scientific work devoted to oceanography, written by J. Richard and published in Paris by Vuibert & Nony at the beginning of the 20th century.
Superb publisher’s bevelled binding in green imitation leather, much rarer than the red version usually encountered. First cover richly decorated in an Art Nouveau / scientific style with maritime scenes, an oceanographic ship, measuring instruments and underwater decor. Back also decorated.
Large, richly illustrated volume with photographs, scientific diagrams, marine zoological figures, oceanographic instruments and folding maps. A highly decorative volume but also historically interesting for the history of marine sciences and the oceanographic expeditions of the Belle Époque.
Condition
Complete and solid copy.
Binding preserved in its original state with:
* rubbing and wear on the headcaps and corners,
* some marks and rubbing on the boards,
* gilding still well preserved,
* preserved gilt edges.
Interior:
* numerous foxings, mainly on the first and last leaves,
* diffuse foxing throughout the body of the work,
* no major tears observed,
* folding map present,
* binding solid.
Very beautiful presentation copy despite the noted flaws.
