Bausch & Lomb pilot sunglasses: history

The history of the Bausch & Lomb pilot sunglasses began in the 1930s, when the company was asked to design sunglasses for pilots. This pair, later known as the Ray-Ban Aviator, was designed to protect pilots from bright sunlight and to help read the cockpit instruments. The glasses had a special filter in the lenses and were designed to preserve visual quality while not obstructing the field of view. The first models came out in 1936 and had dark green lenses. These lenses blocked most dazzling light, helped you see clearly, and kept the eye from getting so tired. They were shaped like a large teardrop, so the pilot could see everything without problems. The Aviator glasses were re-released in 1937 under the Ray-Ban brand.
