Antique wooden builders plate half model of a schooner-rigged steamship from around 1890, approx. 1:70 scale, originating from the Rotterdam area in the Netherlands, dimensions 104 cm wide, 16 cm high, 9 cm deep, weight 4 kg, in good used condition with minor signs of aging and spots.

This very unique shipbuilding half-model is probably of a schooner-rigged steamship from around 1890, with about 1400 gross register tons. The presumed scale is 1:70.
shipbuilding half-models (also called stacking models or 'half-hulls'). Around 1900, during the transition from wood to iron and steel, these wooden models were an indispensable part of the design process in the Rotterdam region.
Before advanced two-dimensional blueprints became common (and long before computers arrived), shipwrights designed the shape of the hull directly in wood.
• Design tool: The designer whittled and sanded a wooden model — consisting of stacked layers of wood (lifts) — until the perfect, hydrodynamic form was reached. Because a ship is symmetrical, half (often the starboard side) was sufficient.
• Plate model: Later, around 1900, when shipyards did use paper line drawings, they instead made a smooth half-model of the ship afterward. Here the engineer drew with a pencil the exact layout plan of the steel hull plates (hull plates) to calculate how large the plates had to be cut.
• The lattice pattern: The fine lines that run over the hull in a brick- or honeycomb-like structure. Each 'stone' in the pattern represents one steel hull plate.
• Numbering: Often there are minuscule numbers scribbled in the compartments. This corresponded directly with the order lists for the steel factories (often in Germany or England).
The refinement: Note how the plates taper and ramp up toward the bow and stern. This model helped the shipwrights in the mold loft to determine how much the plates had to be three-dimensionally bent.
