Description from the seller
"View of the Bosphorus / Vue du Bosphore" – oil on canvas, Jean Baptiste Henri Durand-Brager (1814-1879), France, 19th century
Jean-Baptiste Henri Durand-Brager (1814–1879) was a French painter, born in Brittany and known for his seascapes and Orientalist works. He studied under Gudin and Eugène Isabey. Durand-Brager was a versatile painter who produced seascapes, genre scenes, landscapes, and Orientalist tableaux. Several of his works are in the collections of the Palace of Versailles.
The painting is in good antique condition (not framed), cf. photos, with the typical aging craquelure, the 'fingerprint' of time, which in the restoration world helps distinguish an original masterwork from a modern copy or recent forgery. In the lower left, very faintly, a number is visible, perhaps a date and/or a vanished old signature.
This powerful, antique oil painting captures a scene from a bygone era. With a warm and rich color palette, this maritime scene transports you to the historic harbor of the Bosphorus, a strategically crucial strait in Istanbul, Turkey, linking the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara.
The focal point is formed by a charming, dark-ochre house prominently situated on a spit of land. In the harbor, a traditional rowing boat with a number of passengers drifts, and on the quayside other figures are active, set against the quiet, expansive background, the moored skiff, and the sturdy architecture with its wooden elements, creating a sense of nostalgia.
The artist has wonderfully captured the play of light and shadow. The diffuse, cloudy daylight lends the landscape a dreamlike quality and highlights the textures of the water and the architecture.
An excellent artwork for lovers of Orientalism & Balkan art or collectors specializing in the Ottoman Empire, the Levant, or the Black Sea coast!
IMPORTANT: Given the value, size, and fragility, this artwork must be collected by the buyer!
