Sculpture, L'orso legge "Charivari" - 9.5 cm - Patinated bronze

Very rare bronze sculpture, depicting a bear seated on a rock while reading the newspaper "Charivari" held between its front paws. The rectangular marble base from the Apuan Alps (added later).
Estimated period: early 20th century. French origin.
The sculpture belongs to a genre that was widespread mainly in France and England from 1830 onwards.
"Le Charivari" was an illustrated magazine published in Paris, France, from 1832 to 1937. It published caricatures, political cartoons, and reviews. After 1835, when the government banned political caricatures, Le Charivari began publishing satires on daily life. The name refers to the popular practice of organizing a charivari, a noisy, raucous parade, to humiliate or punish wrongdoers.
The sculpture is made by lost-wax casting in brushed and patinated bronze.
Dimensions: height of sculpture 9.5 cm, maximum width 6.3 cm, maximum depth 7 cm. Marble base dimensions: 8.4 x 8 x 5 cm. Height with base 14.5 cm. Weight with pedestal 1384 g.
