AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Rare and beautiful oil on canvas by François GALL (1912-1987) signed at the bottom right.

GALL is a French painter of Hungarian origin, born March 22, 1912 in Cluj-Napoca (Hungary). He died on December 9, 1987 in Paris.

After having Aurel Popp as his first teacher, he continued his artistic formation in Rome at the Accademia di San Luca in Umberto Coromaldi's workshop, then entered the Collegium Hungaricum and traveled across Europe thanks to a artists’ study grant.

In 1932, his first solo exhibition was organized by his hometown, the second at the National Gallery of Modern Art and Contemporary Art in Rome, where he presented his numerous social subjects.

Arriving in Paris in 1936, he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in the studios of Charles Guérin and André Devambez. He met other artists such as Christian Bérard, Othon Friesz, André Derain and Pablo Picasso, with whom he formed friendships. Happy in this country of freedom he had long dreamed of, he roamed Paris from Montmartre to Montparnasse, via the quays and the great boulevards, in search of new subjects.
It is the liveliness of this Parisian life that he will successfully present in the summer of 1937 at the Szalmasy Gallery in Budapest.

Having participated every year in Paris in the Salon of painters who bear witness to their time, the Francis Smith Prize was awarded to him in 1963, at the Galliera Museum, which enabled him to undertake a study trip to Portugal.

An increasingly recognized artist, François Gall becomes a laureate of the Institut de France and his works have been the subject of exhibitions, from the late 1960s onward, both in France and abroad.
