Portrait of Sapa Inca Pachacutec, an 18th‑century oil on canvas by École du Cusco (XVIII), Peru, 64 × 85.5 cm with frame, weight 3.0 kg, unsigned, in good condition, sold by Galería.
Description from the seller
- Oil on canvas. Original canvas. Rarissima Incan royal effigy.
- This iconographic representation of Pachacútec Inca Yupanqui, frequently integrated in the genealogical series of the Inca lineage of the Cusqueña school, constitutes a complex exercise in political legitimization and visual syncretism. The ninth ruler of the Tahuantinsuyo is depicted with hieratic severity, holding in his right hand the suntur paucar — staff or insignia of command — as the organizing axis of the Andean cosmos and a symbol of his unappealable authority. On his forehead, the crimson mascapaicha is enhanced by the paucar or plume of exotic birds, an attribute exclusive to the dignity of the Sapa Inca. The composition underlines his character of huatacc, or unifier, by placing under his feet the unanchas (standards and emblems) toppled from the subjugated ethnic groups during his military expansion, such as the chancas or the collas. This pictorial device, which employs hierarchical perspective and meticulous detailing in the attire — including the ornamental uncu and the tupayauri — seeks to establish a dynastic continuity that links pre-Hispanic majesty with the succession of the monarchs of the House of Austria, integrating the Quechua sovereign into the concert of the universal history of European origin.
- Dimensions of the framed image: 56 x 78 cm / 64 x 85.5 cm with exclusive antique frame to measure.
