Saint Michael the Archangel in Judgment Day, oil on canvas by Peruvian School (c. 1900), 64 × 48 cm, Peru, 1910–1920, original, sold with frame, in good condition.
Description from the seller
- Oil on canvas. Original canvas.
- In the visual universe of the Peruvian viceroyalty, Cusqueña painting transformed Catholic angelology into one of the most dazzling manifestations of Andean syncretism, elevating the arquebusier archangels to the rank of celestial numens with overwhelming symbolic force. Deprived of European subtlety, these beings of light appear dressed in silk doublets, Flemish laces, and feathers-trimmed hats in the 17th‑century court fashion, wielding firearms and standards not as mere military attributes, but as the sacralized embodiment of trickery and lightning — ancestrally associated with pan-Andean deities like Illapa. This Baroque martiality, far from being intimidating or purely colonial, was reappropriated by Indigenous and mestizo artisans to erect a protective army where the sumptuous beauty of gold brocades and the shine of the arquebus fused Counter-Reformation theology with the cosmogonic power of the mountains, turning seraphim into imperial guardians of an order that is magical, hierarchical, and deeply mestizo.
- Image dimensions without frame: 36 x 52 cm / 48 x 64 cm with exclusive custom frame.
