A particularly charming religious object from the interwar period. This handsome metal statue of Our Lady of Lourdes sits on a richly worked openwork plinth with Gothic motifs and the familiar Marian monogram. The combination of religious symbolism and decorative design gives the piece a strong presence and an authentic devotional aura.
The statue shows Mary with folded hands and rosary, inspired by the apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes in 1858. At the foot of the figure, the inscription ND DE LOURDES is visible, an abbreviation of Notre-Dame de Lourdes (Our Lady of Lourdes). Lourdes grew to become one of the world's most important Catholic pilgrimage sites, making such devotionals especially popular in the first half of the 20th century.
The elegant architectural plinth with openwork cross and Marian motif evokes the Neo-Gothic and Art Deco styles that were popular in religious art between the 1920s and 1940s. The piece was presumably manufactured in cast metal with a silver-colored finish and was intended for a home altar, chapel, or devotional corner.
