Lajos Kolozsváry (1871-1937), Attributed to - – Man met glas

A characterful oil painting attributed to the Hungarian-Austrian painter Lajos Kolozsváry (Pest, 1871–1937). Kolozsváry studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he was taught by, among others, Christian Griepenkerl and August Eisenmenger. From 1891 he exhibited at the Műcsarnok (Kunsthalle) in Budapest. He became best known for lively genre scenes and character studies: old men, scholars, clergy and other figures, often depicted in historical costumes and interiors.

This small, finely painted work fits well with that oeuvre. It depicts an older man in historizing, presumably 17th-century clothing, with a broad white collar, a plumed hat, and a tall glass in his hand. The face is expressively rendered with loose, visible brushwork, while the red and blue-green clothing strongly contrasts with the dark background.
