A striking half-length depiction of Salome holding the plate bearing the severed head of Saint John the Baptist, drawn from the dramatic account in the Gospels. At a lavish feast, King Herod, captivated by Salome’s dance, swore to grant her whatever she wished. At the urging of her mother, Herodias, she demanded the head of John the Baptist, whose condemnation of Herodias’s marriage had made him her enemy. Bound by his public oath, the reluctant Herod ordered the execution, and John’s severed head was brought directly to Salome in the banquet hall.

Here, Salome meets the viewer with a calm, direct gaze, creating a compelling contrast between her poised elegance and the violence of the scene. She is richly attired in a gold and red brocaded dress with fur-trimmed cuffs, accessorised with pearl earrings, while her broad-brimmed red hat, adorned with a white feather and jewelled pin, lends her the fashionable appearance of a courtly princess. The sumptuous costume, refined handling and stark juxtaposition of beauty and brutality reflect the enduring fascination of this popular biblical subject.

Please note: the reverse of the panel bears a punch mark of the Antwerp panel maker Guilliam Gabron (1586-1674). He was one of the most prominent, officially registered panel makers active within the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke. Painters like Jan Brueghel II, Sebastiaen Vrancx, and Gaspar de Crayer frequently painted on oak panels crafted by the Gabron family. Guilliam Gabron was also Van Dyck's favourite panel maker. The mark consists of two capital letters G (with serifs) tied together by a Celtic knot and according to the RKD, this mark can be dated to 1626–1638.
