AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

This concerns a beautiful work by the beloved painter Willem Bastiaan Tholen 1860-1931.
Rustic work that never gets old.
A boat on calm water on a sunny day.
It is oil on canvas mounted on panel as he often did.
The painting is signed bottom right and dated '15.
Together with the beautiful precious gallery frame a jewel on the wall.

Tholen was born in 1860 in Amsterdam as the son of the painter, and later art dealer, Pieter Hendrik Hermanus Tholen and Johanna Maria Arendsen. He grew up in Kampen in an artistic milieu.[3][4] Tholen studied at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, where he obtained the M.O. diploma in drawing and at the Polytechnic School in Delft, where he obtained the M.O. diploma in straight drawing.[5] He was taught by Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriël among others. In Delft Tholen studied with Adolf le Comte.

Tholen settled after his training as a drawing teacher in Gouda and later in Kampen. He lived and worked in various places in the Netherlands. Nature formed the greatest source of inspiration for Tholen.

Tholen married in 1886 to Jacoba Suzanna Muller, who died in 1918. He remarried in 1919 to Lita de Ranitz. He lived and worked in The Hague at the so-called Kanaalvilla. He was a member of the artists’ association Pulchri Studio in The Hague. He died in December 1931 at the age of 71 in his residence in The Hague. He was buried at the Nieuwe Begraafplaats on the Soerenseweg in Apeldoorn in his father’s grave.

His work was awarded in 1903 with the 'golden medal', provided by Queen Mother Emma.
