Joannis Michaelis Cavalieri - Opera omnia liturgica seu Commentaria [1 PLATE] - 1778

DESCRIPTION: I present at auction an interesting piece for any library of ancient books, theology, and canon law: the monumental compendium "Opera Omnia Liturgica, seu Commentaria in authentica Sacrae Rituum Congregationis Decreta...", the work of the learned religious Augustinian R. P. Joannes Michael Cavalieri (Giovanni Michele Cavalieri), published in Bassano / Venice by Remondini in 1778.

This Editio Novissima gathers in a single folio volume the 3 volumes of his famous liturgical treatise (including Volume II divided into Pars Prima and Pars Secunda), preserving its four independent typographic title pages.

A curious fact about Giovanni Michele Cavalieri: Although today he is remembered as one of the most influential canonists and liturgists of the eighteenth century, his tragic end prevented him from seeing his great work completed in life. Cavalieri died suddenly from a stroke (a cerebrovascular accident) while he was in the midst of compiling his final manuscripts on the Roman Missal; thanks to the zeal of his pupils and fellow Augustinian monks, his posthumous notes were rescued, edited, and incorporated into these monumental Opera Omnia, turning his commentaries into an indispensable reference text cited even by the theology academies of Rome, Cambridge, and the very Pope Benedict XIV.

The volume opens with an impressive flat-page copperplate engraving by the renowned Italian engraver Giovanni Volpato (after a drawing by Pau. Bonarinus):

+ Portrait of the Author: Shows R. P. Joannes Michael Cavalieri seated at his study desk, attired in the Augustinian habit and holding the quill with which he drafts his commentaries.

+ Ornamental Baroque Frame: The portrait is framed within an elaborate oval ornamented with scrolls, acanthus leaves, and Baroque motifs.

+ Library Background: In the background one sees the carefully arranged shelves of his library filled with ecclesiastical volumes and codices.

+ Bottom Cartouche: Includes the formal legend: "P. JOANNES MICHAEL CAVALIERI - COMMENTARIOR: IN AUTHENTICA S.R.C. DECR. PRIMUS AUCTOR".
