Ludovic Chirat - Étude des fleurs, Botanique - 1841

Original edition, in two volumes, of this important 19th-century popular science work on botany, written by Ludovic Chirat, professor of natural history.

The work was designed to facilitate the study of botany and, in particular, to enable the identification and classification of plants.

The Linnean Society of Lyon confirms that this first edition was published in 1841 and that it enjoyed enough success to later give rise to several augmented editions.

Volume I – 740 numbered pages
It includes, among other things, Letter to my Students, Study of Flowers, the introduction, the keys allowing the identification of families, and the tables of contents.

Volume II – 800 numbered pages
It comprises the second part of The Study of Flowers, followed by a third part devoted to botany, and ends with an important table of genera, tribes, families and classes of cellular plants.

Total: 1,540 numbered pages.

Kept as a set in two elegant uniform nineteenth-century bindings: green leather spines with raised bands, gold lines and the title “BOTANIQUE,” volumes 1 and 2, boards in green marbled paper.

Bindings show some scuffing and small signs of wear in keeping with age. The photographs show an interior particularly well preserved overall, with some foxing and occasional marks.

A coherent and desirable ensemble for the history of French and Lyonnais botany in the nineteenth century.
