The carafe is made of crystal with a lead content of approximately 33 to 40%, well above the legally required minimum quality of 24%, which gives a beautiful quality and shine. The technique to make this two-tone crystal is called doubling; the glass is mouth-blown in clear crystal, then the piece is doubled (also referred to as bubbled) with the prune-colored crystal. Next the colored crystal is faceted back away, so the clear crystal becomes visible again, and finally the crystal is polished with lava stone and a linen cloth. This labor-intensive process yields a stunning result of the highest quality.
