About the artist:

Jean-Michel Meurice, born 1938 in Lille, developed a double passion as a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tournai, for painting and cinema. In 1960, during his military service in Algeria, he created one of his first works that combined his two passions: a three-hundred-meter-long painted film whose subject consists exclusively of the repeating traces of fingers and brushes; projected onto a canvas, it becomes a moving painting of ten minutes in duration. Since then he has pursued a double career as painter and filmmaker.

In 1963 he first traveled to the USA, where he discovered painting without codes, the abstraction of Ad Reinhardt and the dripping and allover processes that made Pollock famous. He painted repetitive forms (stripes or dots) with spray cans or sponges on large formats. The traditional canvas was often replaced by plastic films or other unusual supports. In 1966 he exhibited in Paris at Jean Fournier together with Hantaï, Degottex, Buraglio, Parmentier and Rouan, and was one of the co-founders of the Support/Surface movement. Four of his “Pénélopes” are in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou, and he designed the ceiling at the Musée Picasso in Antibes. He was awarded the Grand Prix National in 1992 for his overall work. His works have been exhibited worldwide (Centre National des Arts Plastiques Paris, Musée d'Art moderne de Saint-Étienne, Musée Fabre, Fondation Maeght, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lille, Hermitage, Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Rio de Janeiro Museum, Madrid Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art, etc.).

About the artwork:

Roland Garros is the traditional home of the Internationales de France held annually; the tennis tournament is better known worldwide as the French Open. This is one of the official posters that were designed and produced each year for the tennis tournament at Roland Garros.
