About the artist:

Antoni Tàpies was born on December 23, 1923, in Barcelona. He showed a love for art and literature from an early age. During the long convalescence from a lung ailment, Tàpies began to paint and draw. In 1944 he began law studies, which he abandoned in 1946 to devote himself entirely to art. His early paintings were still oriented toward the works of artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, and Joan Miró. After a surrealist and dadaist phase, his works became increasingly abstract. In 1947, with the painting “Zoom,” a programmatic work for his later oeuvre, he began to define his path. In 1948, together with others, he founded the artists’ group “Dau al Set,” of which he became the most important representative.

In 1950, Antoni Tàpies received a stipend from the French government, enabling him to stay in Paris. Also in 1950, the first solo exhibition took place in Barcelona. In 1951, Tàpies traveled to Belgium and the Netherlands. In 1953 he spent a short time in New York, where an exhibition of his works took place. In 1958 he participated in the Venice Biennale and achieved international recognition. He was represented at documenta in Kassel in 1959, 1964, 1968 and 1977.

Antoni Tàpies was regarded as the most important representative of Spanish Informel. He mixed sand, cement, marble dust, glue into his paintings. He scratched off paint and reapplied it until the surface resembled cracked masonry. Throughout his life, Tàpies engaged intensively with Eastern philosophies. In his search for expression, he integrated individual letters, signs, crosses, as well as objects or clothing into his works. Tàpies’s material and wall paintings appear mysterious and meditative. He himself did not call himself an abstract artist, but a realist who sought to make reality comprehensible in his works. In 1984, he founded the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona. The artist passed away on February 6, 2012, in Barcelona.

Roland Garros is the traditional home of the annually held Internationaux de France; the tennis tournament is worldwide better known as the French Open. This is one of the official posters that were designed and created each year for the tennis tournament at Roland Garros.
