From the original work currently housed at the Currier Museum of Art, in Manchester, New Hampshire (USA). The museum acquired it in 1956, thanks to the Currier Funds.

The original is an oil on canvas of about 77 × 97 cm. Hopper kept it in his studio for nearly 30 years before its acquisition by the museum.

The Bootleggers — 'Les Contrebandiers' — takes us into the Prohibition era in America. A boat approaches a large isolated house by the water. On board, two men seem to be making a discreet delivery... Hopper transforms this seemingly peaceful scene into a moment charged with mystery.

A fascinating scene of 1920s America, signed Edward Hopper, one of the greatest masters of American painting of the 20th century.
