Samson Porcelain Plate – Indes Company Style / Rose Family – France – 19th Century

Superb hard-paste porcelain plate produced by the famous Samson factory (Paris), faithfully imitating the porcelain of the East India Company from the 18th century (Qianlong period).

Decor & Iconography: Central decoration hand-painted with polychrome enamels of the Rose Family, depicting a stylized pheasant perched on a balustrade beside a scholar's rock (gongshi), surrounded by blooming peonies and bamboo. The wing is adorned with four floral scrolls and separated from the basin by a gray lattice geometric band.

Technique & Finishes: Hard-paste porcelain with a slightly amber glaze, faithful to Chinese export productions. Enamels with light relief very well executed. Brown-gold gilt line along the rim of the lip.

Origin & Era: France, Paris, Samson House, second half of the 19th century (circa 1870–1890).

Attribution: Characteristic model of the East India Company interpretations by Edmé Samson. The absence of a mark under the base is classic for these pieces intended to replace or complement 18th-century services.
