To the left the background opens to a blue sky and a low-lying landscape.

Technique and material analysis

The canvas is stretched on a wooden wane frame. The weave texture remains locally visible through the paint layer. The face is built up with gradual tonal transitions and individual accents around the eyes, nose and mouth. In the clothing, longer brushstrokes follow the fold lines; light paint passages alternate with gray, blue and yellowish shadow tones. The foliage is developed with shorter, looser strokes. Locally the paint surface shows some relief and fine craquelé.
