Description from the seller
Toon Koster attended the Rotterdam Art Academy. Koster stood in the tradition of the Hague School, although he himself stated that “direction does not exist.” His great influence was Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch. In Koster’s paintings you can also detect influences from, among others, the Amsterdam School and Flemish Expressionism.
The painter is best known for his landscapes with dramatic skies. His oeuvre, which probably comprises more than a thousand paintings, also includes still lifes, foreign cityscapes and landscapes, portraits, figure studies, and animals. He has frequently used the setting of this work.
He had a large family to support, which made his large body of work necessary. Much of his work went to America.
