Pierre Soulages, born December 24, 1919 in Rodez (Aveyron) and died October 25, 2022 in Nîmes (Gard), was a French painter and printmaker.

Associated since the late 1940s with abstract art, briefly close to action painting and lyrical abstraction, he worked outside any group and his work escapes any collective theoretical positioning. Particularly known for his use of reflections of black color, which he calls “noir-lumière” or “outrenoir,” he can nevertheless be considered one of the main representatives of informal painting.

Very early, he achieved significant international success, standing out in two countries in particular: Germany and the United States. He was quickly appreciated by a majority of collectors and received the support of several important figures in the American art world, at a time of great change in the early 1950s, such as art dealer Samuel M. Kootz. His paintings thus entered, from the start of his career, the collections of the greatest European and American museums.

In over sixty years of activity, he established himself as one of the great innovators of modern painting and among the most prolific, creating more than 1,730 canvas paintings, 600 works on paper, 120 prints (etchings, lithographs, serigraphs) as well as the 104 stained glass windows of the Sainte-Foy de Conques abbey church.
