Set of 2 vintage toddler/children's chairs – red steel frame & plywood – stackable – circa 1970s–1980s

Characterful and particularly decorative set of two vintage kids' or preschool chairs, with a warm natural wooden seat and backrest mounted on a striking dark red metal frame.

This type of school furniture was designed for heavy daily use: simple, sturdy, easy to clean and especially practical to store. Similar Dutch school chairs from the 1960s–80s were usually made of molded plywood combined with lacquered steel and are nowadays valued as industrial and retro interior design.

The chairs feature a beautifully continuous metal underframe with legs that extend forward and backward at the floor level. The black plastic end caps protect both frame and floor. The lightly molded plywood seat and backrest create a nice contrast with the Bordeaux-red frame.

A particularly practical detail is that the chairs are stackable, as seen in the photos. Stackability was an important aspect of much professional school furniture, because rooms could be reconfigured or cleared quickly. Comparable vintage school chairs from well-known Dutch manufacturers such as Marko and Galvanitas were produced precisely for their sturdy construction and stackability.

Under the wood there is an original oval factory/control stamp with, among other letters, the letters “VS.” The exact manufacturer cannot be established with sufficient certainty from this marking, so the set is intentionally not attributed to a specific producer.

The combination of plywood and lacquered steel is characteristic of European school furniture from this period. Similar children’s chairs from the 70s and 80s are today collected as authentic industrial interior design and used in kids’ rooms, play corners, studios and vintage interiors.

Condition
Both chairs are in good vintage used condition with clear signs of use fitting their original function and age.

On the seats and backrests there are scratches, small spots, edge wear and localized discoloration. The red-painted metal frames also show some light paint damage, scratches and signs of use in places. The plastic foot caps show normal signs of use.

These marks are not concealed and actually contribute to the authentic character of former school furniture. Please view the photos carefully for the exact condition; they form an integral part of the description.
