A Photobook about a secret and unofficial land: Transnistria (between Moldova and Ukraine)! Exceptional and unknown photographs of a place frozen in the USSR Time!
Sublime retrospective of photographs of an unofficial territory located in the heart of Europe: Transnistria! Unpublished and secret photographs taken by Sylvain Tesson and Nicolas Righetti over several years! Located between Moldova and Ukraine, this incredible territory has remained frozen in the 1980s USSR era, a unique photography book in its own right, absolutely unpublished, with captivating photographs of this territory where tourism does not exist!
Favre publishing edition, 2014, original edition, immaculate book, richly illustrated, hardcover format, excellent condition, approx 140 pages perfectly preserved and beautifully printed, color photographs by Nicolas Righetti and foreword by Sylvain Tesson, condition excellent.
"TRANSNISTRIA, A Country that Does Not Exist" represents the most unpublished and audacious photographic project of the photographer, bringing together in a single unpublished volume photographs of a territory where tourism simply does not exist, Transnistria, a secret territory in Europe, with no tourism or particular media attention.
Unpublished photography book, a beautiful volume of high quality! Magnificent copy, absolutely unpublished and particularly photogenic!
Nicolas Righetti was born in 1967 in Geneva, where he currently lives. He has been a member of the agency “Rezo.ch” since 2001. After studying social sciences, he attended the Geneva School of Art in the cinema section and then devoted himself to photography. He has worked for many Swiss newspapers. His travels around the world, especially in Asia, sparked in him a growing interest in megalomaniac and totalitarian political figures.
During stays in dictatorships, he develops an original stylistic approach, which takes the decorum of power into its own game. From these trips will come four books that will win prestigious photography prizes in some cases.
Some descriptive elements:
"Transnistria, in Moldova, is recognized as a country only by the Transnistrians, which does not prevent this former Soviet territory from having its own flag, its president, and a capital of its own, Tiraspol.
For most people, the name Transnistria evokes nothing. Those who know a little of Eastern Europe might recognize it as a region of Moldova. For the Transnistrians, it is their country since the declaration of its independence in 1990. A country that is not recognized by anyone, which does not prevent this former Soviet territory, a narrow strip of land along the Ukrainian border, from having its own flag, its president, and a capital of its own, Tiraspol.
Time seems to have stood still in this once-prosperous region where everything recalls the USSR. Many of its inhabitants, majority Russian-speaking, regret the era when Moscow ruled all of Eastern Europe. Life was simpler for them then. Today, the Moldovan government pays little attention to their views and leans toward a European Union that Transnistrians do not want.
In this beautiful color photographic album, Nicolas Righetti presents an original portrait of the inhabitants of this country that is not one.
Sylvain Tesson, writer and great traveler, signs the preface to this work.
Independent since 1992, even though it is not recognized by anyone, Transnistria, with its unlikely capital Tiraspol, is a strip of land between Ukraine and Moldova, whose inhabitants have long chosen their side. No to Europe, yes to Russia. The Transnistrians have taken up arms to leave a Moldova eyeing too much toward the West. A less benevolent eye would regard Transnistria as a comic republic.
A more attentive look will reveal colorful inhabitants who did not want to be the forgotten of history. The Transnistrians dream of ecology, tourism, of relearning everything, but one thing they know for sure: to the west they would be only second-class citizens. Nostalgic for the USSR, when they could travel halfway around the world, today their passport serves nowhere beyond a country that does not exceed ten kilometers in width in some places. One thinks of Borduria or Syldavia from Tintin, except that Transnistria truly exists."
Unique, retrospective, and magnificent copy, absolutely captivating!
