Sorrento secret inlay box – Hidden mechanism in the lid – 20th century

Refined wooden box made in Sorrento craftsmanship, produced according to the renowned tradition of Sorrento wood inlay, characterized by very rich decoration and an unusual secret opening and closing mechanism integrated into the lid.

The top panel features an elegant field of light wood entirely adorned with elaborate vegetal and arabesque motifs created through inlay using contrasting wood species. The composition, particularly dense and harmonious, is enclosed by multiple geometric frames and a decorative outer edge.

At the center stands a raised and movable diamond-shaped element, decorated with a small polychrome figurative scene. This element is not purely ornamental: it constitutes the hidden control for the box’s ingenious system.

Lowering the central diamond locks the lid, while lifting it releases it, allowing the box to be opened. A curious and refined gimmick, designed to conceal the locking mechanism within the decoration itself and making the object decidedly more interesting than ordinary inlaid boxes.

The body, rectangular in shape, rests on four small angular feet and is enhanced by different wood species and thin fillets. The interior is left natural and preserves the wooden mechanism connected to the particular lid system.

Together, the piece testifies to the great skill of the Sorrento artisans in uniting fine cabinetry, decoration, and small mechanical details in objects intended not only for use but also to surprise and intrigue.

Normal signs and small imperfections consistent with age and use are present, clearly documented in the photographs. The opening and closing mechanism represents a particularly fascinating element of the object.
