Giglio Girolamo. New Seconda Selva of Various Readings. Venice, Fabio and Agostino Zoppini, 1581. Sixteenth-century edition of the classic Renaissance zibaldone that combines accounts of historical events with morsels of curiosity. A vast collection of anecdotes, historical curiosities, biographies, prodigious feats, and memorable sayings, from the greatest height of man compared to woman to the most famous privateers; from the invention of printing to the first cooks, from the inventors of perfumes to the Knights of Rhodes, with many references to Italian history such as the origin of the Normans, Giovanni da Procida’s deeds in Sicily, the birth of Frederick II, the death of Corradino. Notable also is the extensive chapter devoted to the discovery of the New World. Binding in old parchment. Covers clad in multicolored paper. Printer’s mark engraved on the title page. Dimensions 15 x 10 cm, 8 leaves, 198 (pagination on full sheets). Excellent condition.
